At SSAA Sydney, we take safety seriously—without taking the fun out of shooting! Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or just picking up a firearm for the first time, knowing the rules and practicing safe handling is the key to enjoying the sport responsibly.
🏆 The Golden Rules of Safe Shooting
No matter what you’re shooting—rifle, shotgun, or pistol—these rules apply every single time you handle a firearm:
1️⃣ TREAT every firearm as if it’s loaded. Always. No exceptions.
2️⃣ NEVER point a firearm at anything you don’t intend to shoot. Keep that muzzle in a safe direction!
3️⃣ KEEP your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to fire. Accidental discharges are not cool.
4️⃣ BE SURE of your target and what’s beyond it. Bullets don’t just stop when you miss—always know what’s downrange.
Pro Tip: If you ever feel unsure—STOP! Ask an experienced shooter or Range Officer for guidance.
Range Safety: Play by the Rules!
Shooting ranges are designed for fun and skill-building, but everyone must follow the rules to keep it safe.
✔ Listen to the Range Officer – They’re the boss, and their word is final!
✔ Wear Your Safety Gear – Eye and ear protection are mandatory (bonus points if they look cool 😎).
✔ Unload & Check Your Firearm – Only load when you’re on the firing line and given the all-clear.
✔ Cease Fire Means STOP – If you hear “”CEASE FIRE,”” stop shooting, unload your firearm, and wait for instructions.
✔ Clean Up After Yourself – Spent brass and empty shells belong in the bin, not on the ground!

Safe Storage: Lock It Up!
Owning a firearm is a responsibility, and part of that means storing it safely. NSW laws require:
🔒 A properly secured gun safe – No hiding it under your bed!
🔒 Ammunition stored separately – Keep it locked away from your firearms.
🔒 Restricted access – Only licensed shooters should have access to your firearms.
❗ Breaking these laws can lead to heavy fines or losing your license—don’t risk it!
