📢 Important Update for Try Shooting at SSAA Sydney Branch 📢

We’ve recently seen an increase in new shooters bringing multiple try shooters to our ranges under P650s. While we warmly welcome interest in our sport, safety is our top priority.

Unfortunately, we have observed cases where inexperienced licensed shooters supervising try shooters have led to unsafe practices, language barriers affecting communication, and poor range etiquette, including disputes with our volunteer range officers. This came to a head over the weekend with an unsafe incident involving a newly licensed shooter supervising try shooters.

To maintain the highest safety standards, we are implementing new policies:

✅ Temporary Limit on Try Shooters – Until the certification process has been properly vetted, no licensed shooter may supervise more than two (2) try shooters per day. This restriction is in place immediately to ensure safe practices on our ranges.

✅ Instructor Certification Requirement (Coming Soon) – Once the certification process is finalised, licensed shooters will need to complete a P650 Instructor Certification Course to supervise more than two (2) try shooters in a day. This ensures all instructors have the necessary skills and knowledge, including:

•Proper firearm handling and sighting at different distances

•Understanding of range standing orders

•Effective supervision and communication with try shooters

•A minimum of two (2) years of holding a firearms license in Australia (You must meet this requirement to take the course)

✅ English Proficiency Requirement – All try shooting supervisors must have a fundamental understanding of English to ensure clear communication and compliance with safety procedures.

✅ Commercial Try Shooting Operations – Any individuals or groups intending to run a commercial operation involving try shooting at SSAA Sydney ranges must seek formal approval. This ensures all activities meet our safety standards and operate within our regulations. Unauthorised commercial activity will not be permitted.

These measures are in place to protect our members, volunteers, and the public, while ensuring a safe and enjoyable shooting experience for all.

We appreciate your cooperation and commitment to firearm safety. If you have any questions about these new policies, the certification process, or commercial approvals, please contact SSAA Sydney staff.
